2013 MASS Seminar #1 - Associate Professors Rawinia Higgins and Poia Rewi
Don’t miss the first seminar in the MASS series. Hear Dr Rawinia Higgins (Victoria University of Wellington) and Dr Poia Rewi (University of Otago) talk about their research project, “Te Kura Roa: The Value of the Māori Language” from 12-1pm on Tuesday 28 May 2013.
Abstract: Understanding what helps people become active users of the Māori language could hold the key to reversing the decline in speaker numbers. That is the focus of Te Kura Roa, a three-year Ngā Pae o te Māramatanga-funded research project to investigate how Māori language contributes to economic development, cultural identity and social cohesion. As project co-leaders, Associate Professor Rawinia Higgins’ research focus is on community responsiveness to the Māori language, while Associate Professor Pōia Rewi is examining state responsiveness. The project also involves an edited book about what has happened to the Māori language over the last 25 years. Overall, the project aims to demonstrate the value of the Māori language to New Zealand as a whole, not just Māori, because raising awareness of and interest in the Māori language helps to build a strong, distinctive national identity.
